20/09/2013 Dunton Bassett to Ashby Parva circular walk – 5 miles.

Directions for next weeks walk are below this blog.

13 of us set out on a bright morning. Driving to the start of the walk in Dunton Bassett.  A walk had been suggested and a map supplied so off we set.

We decided to take the longer route to Ashby Parva timing our arrival at the pub (Holly Bush) to coincide with the opening time.

This part of the walk is mainly on paths through fields of stubble going from yellow waymark to yellow waymark.  We passed the sand quarries where we spotted the Mick Dann Crushing car, which we thought worth a photograph.

Eventually we reached Ashby Parva where the Aston Martin window was spotted.

At the Holly Bush we sat in the garden.  As it was Friday we had unfortunately missed the “Any two burgers and a bucket of beer for £20” offer so most of us settled for a cup of coffee.

The route back to Dunton Bassett was by way of a quiet road where we saw a couple of buzzards (wrong camera and lens and they were far away) and some cows (safely behind barbed wire).  The giant windmills were in the background.

Sadly one of our regular walkers is in hospital having had major surgery on Monday. We all wish her a speedy and complete recovery and hope to see her walking with us soon.

06-09-2013 Walk from Cosby to Enderby via Narborough Approx 6.5miles.

The weather forecast was a damp wet day to start with on Friday morning and the rest of the day was to be much of the same. Temperatures were to tumble by at least 10 degrees and, you know, the weather forecasters got it right.

Not many in the Car Park
We set off on a Plan B walk as there were doubts about fields that might have been ploughed (in wet weather walking across a ploughed field is not fun). Eight walkers had turned up to brave the elements and it did not take us long to get started.

We headed out of Cosby towards Littlethorpe and  Narborough, through Narborough and over the main road near the motorway bridge heading up towards Enderby Leisure Centre.  From there we walked into the centre of Enderby to the cafe for coffee, tea and chocolate cake for some.

Train Spotting

On the way back the weather cleared up a little.

We stopped for a bit of train spotting in Narborough. One of the group mentioned that there are trains every hour during the day to Stansted airport from Narborough - a useful bit of information we thought (you could see people were thinking of sunnier climates).

Well, that was the highlight of a very damp walk and it just kind of reminded us all that Autumn was on it's way.

Next week the weather will be better - you have to be optimistic about these things!

30 August 2013 Walk from Smeeton Westerby to Foxton Locks approx 6 mls

Lovely day for a walk. We decided to start from Smeeton Westerby and parking was organised at the Archery club which was most appreciated. On arrival we sorted out which way to walk out of Smeeton and off we  went.
Walking out of the village involved a trip down some gardens and a couple of streets before we found the path out.

We went down a lane and on to fields of cows and chickens heading for the canal.
You have to turn right through the hedge and then you find the route to Foxton.

It's another world through that hedge - boats coming and going even sideways on.

The walk continued to Foxton Locks

We all sat down for a welcome rest, a cuppa, cake and a pint.

Suitably fed and watered, we walked it off by heading back to the cars. It was a great day out and we are all looking forward to next Friday. Wonder where we will be going?
