Friday 12th July Walk starting at Fleckney via Wistow approx 5.6miles

It was another sunny day and  thirteen of us gathered for a walk starting at Fleckney. We were going to use the car park at the Baptist Church but that was full so we ended up on the grass verge near the allotments.

Wide paths

To start it was very easy going with  nice wide paths but we knew from experience that this was not going to last. Soon we were down to single file - the odd style gets you into a proper walking frame of mind.

Single File
Easy going

Just the odd style.

Tractor tracks can be very helpful.

We saw a family of geese on the canal and a very nice canal boat came  into view.

Leaving the canal we headed towards Wistow Garden Centre passing by the ancient church and the part grown Wistow Maize Maze.

At the garden centre restaurant we took a well earned break.

Leaving Wistow we headed back to Fleckney.

The ground is starting to look parched

It was a really enjoyable day, good company. good weather and good cake!

Don't forget its an away day next Friday  9.00 am start

Tuesday, 9 July 2013

On July 19th we will be starting early.   Postponed

9.00AM from the Village Hall Car Park. Please bring a packed lunch and a drink. One hour 20mins travelling time.

The reason is an away day in the Cotswolds.   A circular walk has been organised  just south of Upton House taking in the villages of Winderton and Upper Tysoe.

The walk has been checked out and is hilly in places. It is beautiful countryside with good views and a hillside view of Compton Verney. The walk measures 7.5 miles, so we will be having two stops on the way round. This time of the year nettles are high in the hedge rows so long walking trousers may be wise.

On leaving Cosby we will go directly to a cafe in Upper Tysoe for a comfort break then on to Winderton where we will start our walk. First stop on the walk will be Upper Tysoe for another comfort break. The second stop will be lunch at a country cross roads, grass armchairs whilst we eat and watch the world go by. Then on to our destination Winderton.

£5.00 to driver please to help with diesel/petrol. Thank you.

If time allows you may want to have a quick look at Upton House Gardens on the way back (National Trust).
Please take your national trust membership card

Friday 5th July Fosse Meadows to Claybrooke Magna approx 5miles

Twelve walkers travelled by car the short distance from Cosby to Fosse Meadows car park all wearing suitable footwear and clothing FOR A SUMMER WALK. It doesn't happen very often so it needs to be shouted about; the temperature was in the twenties.

Oil Seed Rape

Wheat

The clear blue sky brought out the knees and bare arms. Sun tan lotion was applied in strategic places, so off we set.

Concentration

Yes, this weather is good for lots of things including accelerating weed growth including nettles.
Farmers were making the most of it cutting and baling hay which makes it easy walking across the fields.

We turned the corner of the field heading towards Claybrooke Mill and found chest high weeds and nettles. It was suggested that we did a detour but time was pressing, we hadn't had a coffee stop or a piece of cake, so on we pressed.

Now look at that cake, the cold drinks, coffee and tea were excellent but the cake well !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The wonderful establishment that serves up excellent cake for
hungry walkers is

We had a great day walking in the area and the weather was great.

Will it be as good next week; lets hope so see you all then.

Friday 28th June. Walk Cosby to Narbourgh via Whetstone 5.8 miles.

It was a wet, damp and generally miserable morning and it was not going to get any better according to the experts, which is probably why only five walkers turned up to participate  in a squelchy walk some where. It was unanimously decided to go and walk past the local tip and see what progress the council had made with the redevelopment of the site.Well, it is our money they are using.
The tip
Off we set fully togged up head to toe. First stop was Whetstone village and then round to the tip.
It has stopped raining you know

No we didn't  get on the bus

Well, the tip looked very exciting, gobbling up recycled rubbish and waste to be transported to factories to make paper for bums, cans for drinks and food waste into garden fertilizer.  Clever stuff recycling, so I suppose the new tip will do even more recycling.

We continued on our way and quickened  our pace as somebody had mentioned a cup of coffee and perhaps a slice of cake.

Coffee and cake demolition establishment
After the coffee we continued via the railway station to Littlethorpe passing a twinning stone.

Station (Level crossing 'Ha Ha')
Genappe Belgium 1994.

Usually some ducks but it's too wet today so they have stopped in

It was a good walk considering the conditions - we hope for better weather next week.
