Friday 5th July 2019 Circular walk Smeeton Westerby to Gumley via Foxton locks. app 6.5 mls.

After meeting at Cosby Village Hall car park we set off for Smeeton Westerby. We had arranged to park in the local archery clubs grounds with the help of one of our regular walkers who had the gate open for us on our arrival and secured the parking after we left for our walk. A big thank you from all the walkers.

The archery club entrance.

It was a sunshine filled day, clear blue skies with the occasional fluffy white cloud floating by.

All booted up we started our walk towards the village of Smeeton Westerby.

Soon we were walking through the village passing the local pub The Kings Head as we headed for Debdale Lane. The route would take us down to the canal at Debdale Wharf Marina.

Cows and their calves were out in force much to the horror of one or two of the walkers.

Ponies had fly masks on to protect them from the irritating pests.

Fermenting bales of hay - food in storage for cattle during the winter months.

Wandering along the canal side, very pleasant with only a few boats out and about.

Needed to watch out for the bridge that we had to cross in order to get to Gumley. Didn't want to miss it as it would have meant a huge detour.

Having found the correct bridge we crossed over and headed for The Bell at Gumley looking forward to our coffee, tea and cooling drinks.

Not far to go, a not too steep a hill and we entered the village along the Leicestershire Round pathway.

Lost - how could we be possibly get lost?

After cooling off in the beer garden at the back of the  pub we set off out of the village.

Artistic work on some of the local door steps.

Medieval statues near the old tower.

We managed to take a wrong turning in the church yard. This was soon rectified and we set off out of Gumley on the way back to Smeeton Westerby across the fields.

Heading back down to the canal.

Found the bridge across the canal.

Inquisitive cows were deterred from joining our walking party.

There were cows or bulls in just about every field we walked through on our return journey, much to the horror of some of our walkers.

Back on terrra firma we headed back to the archery field.

A brilliant day for a walk, a little bit longer than usual, maybe we will try to counter that by having a shorter walk next week.
