We started on Debdale Lane, Smeeton Westerby (LE8 0QD), parking on the
wide verge.
We walked down to Debdale Warf and then went along the canal towpath
until we reached Bridge 63 where we crossed the canal and took the footpath up
to Gumley.
Coffee was at The Bell, Gumley (we had phoned ahead and warned them that
there would be 23 of us and they premade lots of coffee). We enjoyed
the coffee (and tea) in the garden.
We walked through Gumley, admiring the church which looked beautiful in
the autumn sunshine. One of our walker's took the opportunity to visit the grave of his parents
who are buried in the churchyard.
Taking the footpath at the side of the church we minimised the amount of
road we had to walk on. We walked to the footpath across the fields back to
where we had parked the cars.
The last but one gate on the footpath had, for no obvious reason, been
blocked by the farmer who had left a contact phone number for the Footpath
Inspector. We climbed over the obstacle back to our cars. Walk measured at 5.2
miles.
Everyone agreed a beautiful walk over beautiful countryside.
